DESCRIPTION

Meiping Vase with Dragon Motif 1300s China, Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) Porcelain with pale bluish-white glaze, qingbai ("blue-white") ware with carved decoration 27.9 cm (11 in.) Nancy F. and Joseph P. Keithley Collection Gift 2020.189 DESCRIPTION This 14th-century vase with carved decoration under a transparent bluish-white glaze (qingbai) depicts a coiling dragon amid thick mists and clouds—a symbol of fertility and power. The sturdy shape and lively carving under its bluish glaze are particularly charming as they characterize the ware’s later, more spontaneous and less formalized production under the Mongol occupation. PROVENANCE ?-2017 (J.J. Lally & Co., New York, NY, sold to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Keithley) 2018-2020 Nancy F. and Joseph P. Keithley, Cleveland, OH, given to the Cleveland Museum of Art 2020- The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
