DESCRIPTION
Fig. 102: THE INTERIOR OF ST JAMES’S CHURCH, by a Delhi artist, perhaps Mazhar Ali Khan, 1836-40. The octagonal drum of the dome is supported by the massive arches within the church also supporting a smaller inner dome while the outer walls also form an octagon with doors at the angles between the arms of the cross. This is a spectacularly difficult view for an Indian artist untrained in western perspective. Perhaps only Mazhar Ali Khan himself could have pulled this off in view of his other difficult perspective views (figs 35 and 99). The view is towards the chancel through the central arches where obviously the congregation mostly sat since this is where the punkahs are and past the twin pulpits. Watercolour, National Army Museum, London, 1956-02-27-4.
