Description
This work is of a practical character, and professes to be a description of the actual circumstances of the castes and tribes, of which it treats. No one can be more alive to the difficulty of the task he has undertaken than the writer himself. Although he has striven to make the work as complete as possible, he is deeply conscious of the imperfectness of his achievement. It has appeared to him strange that hitherto no one has attempted to give in English a consecutive and detailed. account of the castes of India. Mughal Library
