Agra. The Fort 1890 Photoglob Co. (Zurich, active c. 1890-1910) India, 19th century Photochrom Image: 20.4 x 26.5 cm (8 1/16 x 10 7/16 in.); Paper: 20.4 x 26.5 cm (8 1/16 x 10 7/16 in.) Purchase from the Karl B. Goldfield Trust 2018.215 DID YOU KNOW? It took 1,444,000 builders eight years to build the sandstone fort, which was completed in 1573. DESCRIPTION Known as the Red Fort because of the rosy sandstone used to build it; the fort was a walled city that served as home to the Mughal emperors until 1638. The height and massiveness of the walls are emphasized by the inclusion of the Indian travelers resting in the foreground. INSCRIPTION Imprinted in gold on recto in lower left corner: “20027.
