DESCRIPTION

Bahadur Shah Zafar holding darbar in Diwan e Khas of Qila e Mubarak ( #RedFort) He is sitting on the later day replica of the Peacock Throne or Takht e Taoos. The original throne was taken away in 1739 by Nader Shah and later destroyed. This throne has the same name but is very different in style. On either sides are his son's. On the right are Mirza Jawab Bakht and Mirza Fakhru while on the left is Mirza Mughal. Mirza Jawan Bakht was born in 1841 and that helps to date this painting to around the beginning of 1850's. The British Resident ( Metcalfe) can also be seen. The man in uniform could possibly be the Qiledar. In 1857 the Qiledar was Capt Douglas. Could the white bearded gentleman near the Capt. be Hakim Ahsanullah Khan? In 1850 the Hakim was the royal physician but hadn't become the Wazir and gained the kind of importance he did in 1857.

MUGHAL IMAGES

The Mughal Images immediately took a much greater interest in realistic portraiture than was typical of Persian miniatures. Animals and plants were the main subject of many miniatures for albums and were more realistically depicted. To upload your images click here.
