DESCRIPTION
Fig. 75: DIWAN BABU RAM AND HIS ADOPTED SON, 1820-30. Diwan Babu Ram is scated on the ground with papers, books, pen-cases and spectacles; beside him is his adopted Son and a chuprassy stands behind. The painting is from an album compiled from drawings done by Col. James Skinner's artists at Hansi and Delhi. Skinner (see fig. 78) employed Ghulam Ali Khan to work on three large paintings done for him at Hansi in 1827 and the elongated figure of the chuprassy here is also found standing to the side in Ghulam Ali Khan's regimental durbar picture in the National Army Museum, London. He is wearing a chapra or badge on his sash ornamented with a mounted cavalryman, clcarly indicating his connection with Skinner's regiment and hence Babu Ram as Skinner's diwan or man who looked after his finances. Watercolour and bodvcolour, British Library. London, Add. O.1264
