DESCRIPTION

Mahadaji Sindhia (ruled 1782-94) entertaining a British naval officer and a young British military officer to a nautch in his house at Delhi. Note: A similar portrait of Sindhia inscribed with Sindhia’s name is in Bharat Kala Bhawan, Benares. See also the portrait by, James Wales, F826. This painting is in similar style to Add.Or.2 and must have been made about the same time. The uniforms confirm a date in the early nineteenth century. Sindhia died in 1794 but it is likely that he was included in sets of pictures of Delhi celebrities for some years after his death. The young military officer is probably a light cavalryman.

MUGHAL IMAGES

The Mughal Images immediately took a much greater interest in realistic portraiture than was typical of Persian miniatures. Animals and plants were the main subject of many miniatures for albums and were more realistically depicted. To upload your images click here.
