DESCRIPTION
The Residency in Lucknow was a complex of buildings that served as a residence for the British Resident General in Lucknow, India. The complex was also used as a military garrison during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
The front of the Residency in Lucknow in 1858 would have looked quite different from its current appearance. At that time, the complex was heavily damaged after a siege that lasted for several months during the rebellion.
The siege of the Residency began on June 30, 1857, when Indian rebel forces surrounded the complex and began attacking it with artillery and small arms fire. The British and Indian defenders of the Residency held out for 87 days, enduring constant attacks and bombardment, until they were finally relieved by a British force on November 17, 1857.
By the time the siege was lifted, the Residency was in ruins. The buildings had been battered by artillery fire, and many had been burned or partially destroyed by fire. The grounds were littered with rubble, and the gardens had been destroyed.
In 1858, after the rebellion had been put down, the British began the task of repairing the damage to the Residency. The process of reconstruction took several years, and many of the buildings were rebuilt in a different style from their original appearance.
So, the front of the Residency in Lucknow in 1858 would have been a scene of destruction and devastation, with little remaining of the once-grand complex.
