DESCRIPTION

ig. 39: THE WATER GATE OF THE PALACE, photograph by John Murray, 1858. The Water Gate, the south-eastern gate to the Red Fort was constructed by Emperor Shahjahan (r. 1627-1658) for his new city Shahjahanabad. The Water Gate is sited at the south-east corner of the Red Fort below the Asad Burj and leads into a small triangular shaped barbican with a doorway into the palace near the baoli, which is all that remains of the hamman marked on this site in fig. 86. Beyond the Asad Burj may be seen indistinctly the changes wrought in the zenana area by the Mughal princes in the 19th century. British Library, London, Photo 52/(31).

MUGHAL IMAGES

The Mughal Images immediately took a much greater interest in realistic portraiture than was typical of Persian miniatures. Animals and plants were the main subject of many miniatures for albums and were more realistically depicted. To upload your images click here.
