DESCRIPTION
Photograph of an unidentified Islamic domed tomb and another ruined building at Ajmer in Rajasthan, taken by O.S. Baudesson in the 1880s, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. Ajmer was the capital of the Chauhan Rajputs in the 12th century and lies at the foot of the Taragarh hill. The Mughal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) annexed the city in 1556, later Abkar's sucessors Jahangir and Shah Jahan lived there for long periods. After the collapse of the Mughal Empire the city fell to Jodhpur, then to the Marathas before it was annexed by the British in 1818.
