William Fraser (1784-1835) had served in Delhi for thirty ycars when he was murdered by Karim Khan, on the instigation of Shams al-Din, Nawab of Firozepur, the aggrieved son of his old friend Nawab Ahmad Bakhsh Khan. Fraser was buried first in the Christian cemetery north of the Red Fort (sce fig. 106) before he was re-interred in the graveyard of St. James's Church in a marble tomb decorated with tree of life patterns in pietra dura provided by his old friend James Skinner.
