Fig. 66: THE MUGHAL EMPEROR AURANGZEB (1658-1707) ON HORSEBACK, Mughal, c. 1670, Having dethroned his father, exccuted his eldest brother and caused the deaths of the remaining two, Aurangzeb ascended the throne in Delhi in 1658. In this triumphal equestrian portrait, Aurangzeb is depicted as a mail-clad warrior as he no doubt would have wished to be remembered, as a ghazi or warrior for the orthodox faith. He left Delhi for the Deccan in 1679 never to return. Opaque watercolour and silver, 30 x 24 cm. British Library, London, Johnson Album.3, no. 4.
