DESCRIPTION

Facing page: Fig. 101: SCALES OF JUSTICE SCREEN, photograph by Joseph Beglar, 1870-80. From the Archaeological Survey of India collection. This beautiful jali is in the Tasbih Khana facing the south side of the Diwan-i Khas and is placed over the Nahr-i Bihisht which runs underneath it. The upper semi-circular panel depicts a crescent moon, stars and the scales of justice, the latter used as a regal emblem. The lower section is carved in an intricate floral and lattice work design. Here seated on an improvised throne in front of the screen Bahadur Shah was declared emperor in 1837. British Library, London, Photo 1003/(876)
