Description
In a RECENT discussion by Burke and Po-Chia Hsia on the idea and practice of translation, two contrasting images are juxtaposed, that of the tower of Babel which collapsed because its builders were dispersed by the diversity of tongues and the other of the House of the European Community which survives on an army of interpreters.1 Both images bring out the centrality of translation in communication.
