If the Btory of the Tower of Babel has any meaning, it is rightly applicable to the case of India. India is a land of diverse language*and dialects. The Census of India, records aB many as 1,652 mother tongues, out of which 103 are foreign mother tongues, while 2 the reBt i.e., 1,549 are Indian mother tongues. Philologists have classified these languages and dialects into four distinct families viz., Indo-Aryan ( a sub-family of Indo-European ), Dravidian, Austro-Asiatic ( a sub-family of Austrio ) and Tibeto-Chinese.
