Description
The present dissertation studies the structure of the agrarian society in Northern Bengal from 1765 to 1800. 1765 was the year when the East India Company acquired the Diwani (the authority to collect the revenue) of the Bengal Presidency and the Mughals finally lost their hegemony there* The more or less stable and well-defined agrarian social structure of the Mughal period was put in disarray.
