Shah Jahan, the fourth Mughal Emperor, would not have ascended to the Mughal throne if his step-mother, Nur Jahan, had her way. The two initially worked together to assure Shah Jahan’s succession on the death of his father, Jahangir, but in the final years of Jahangir’s reign Nur Jahan began to poison the king’s mind against his heir-apparent.
