The Mughals came to India as Timurids. Founded by the Turko‐Mongol warlord Timur (Tamerlane) (c. 1370–1405), the Timurid dynasty ruled much of Iran and Central Asia for over a century (c. 1370–1507), first from Samarqand (Uzbekistan) and then from Herat (Afghanistan). Toward the end of the fifteenth century its realms were already diminishing.
